DOA results - Gresham, OR 4/28/13

DOA "Anger Management"
Gresham, OR @ the East Portland Moose Lodge
Sunday April 28, 2013

The show started 25 minutes late. From what I heard, it was because the Portland Wrestling Uncut tapings just happened to run long, preventing a lot of the crew from getting to the show on time.

The show opened with DOA champ Dr. Kliever confronting promoter Terry Farness about an unsafe work environment. Kliever had a contract for Farness to sign, presumably changing the main event from a streetfight to a regular match, but I couldn't quite make out everything they were saying. Farness tricked Kliever into signing a different contract, which allows J_Sinn Sullivan to return to DOA (Kliever had beat Sullivan in a loser leaves town match). Farness announced Kliever will face J_Sinn in a streetfight at the Moose Lodge on June 9th.

Michael Sweetser returned and introduced the also returning SCOTTY MAC. The evil Canadians get the crowd riled up and out comes Mac's opponent, my personal favorite, RAVENOUS RANDY MYERS. Myers channeled Shawn Michaels and picked his nose with the Canadian flag, which Scotty Mac pointed out was weird since Myers is also from Canada.

1) Ravenous Randy Myers defeated Scotty Mac

Quiz was at the announce table with the Pure title belt, which he stole from Ethan HD. He taunted Ethan with the belt as he came out. Before the match between Ethan and Jonas Albert Robinson could start, Eric Right came out. He said since his opponent, Cameron Starr, couldn't make it to the show, he has been added to the Pure title match. He then informed his partner, Robinson, that tonight they are not friends or partners.

2) Pure champ Ethan HD won a 3-way over Jonas Albert Robinson and Eric Right
Robinson helped Right to the back after the match, so their team is intact. Ethan and Quiz argued over the Pure title belt at the announce table.

3) Tag team champs Rock'n Ricky Gibson & CJ Edwards defeated Kellen Raeth & Jorel Nelson
Some women in the front row gave Edwards a couple bras to taunt Raeth with. Another funny moment was one of the guys (Edwards I think) doing a top rope dive, which caused a woman in the front row to spill her hot dog. She then proceeded to take a solid five minutes to clean up from the hot dog. How many damn toppings did she have on that thing?

Wade BY GOD Hess comes out next. He lets us know that his partner Nate Andrews is unable to wrestle due to injuries sustained at the show in Keizer on Friday, so he will wrestle alone tonight.

4) The Blanchard Brothers (w/ Mr. Ooh La La) defeated Wade BY GOD Hess in a handi-cap match

5) Mike Santiago defeated Tony Kozina
These guys worked hard, but it was like Indy wrestling does Japan overkill. On three different occasions they did the whole barely able to stand and trade hard slaps and punches spot. They had tons of near falls. Plenty of ground work. But it just didn't click for me. It didn't tell a story. It was just a collection of spots and drama that work in the correct context, but didn't seem to work here. Maybe it would have played better in front of a different crowd. After the match, Santiago said he got into wrestling because of Davey Richards, and since Kozina was Richards mentor, he wouldn't be a wrestler without Kozina. They hug and raise hands.

6) DOA champ Dr. Kliever, Draven Vargas, & Ethan HD defeated Exile, HB Quiz, & Derek Drexl
Ethan was subbing for Pat Large. He and MJ weren't at the show, and they never said why. The finish saw Quiz and Ethan get into a tug-o-war over the Pure title belt. Exile went to spear Ethan, just as he let go of the belt, causing Quiz to take the spear. Kliever pinned Quiz to retain his title. Quiz is not allowed a title shot for six months because of the pin. After the match, Quiz blamed Exile for the loss. He and Drexl put over DOA and did the normal way too long babyface promo to end the show.

Next DOA show is May 10th in Independence with Hess vs. Bubba in a first blood match. Next show in Portland is June 9th with Kliever vs. J_Sinn in a streetfight.

Portland Wrestling Uncut T.V. recap - 4/27/13

-Joe V interviews Exile. The Grappler and his REPLACEMENT WRESTLERS (don't call them scabs, punk) come out. Grappler takes credit for getting Exile his PNW title shot, but Exile says he earned it himself. God Save the Queen plays and GENTLEMAN GEORGE MICHAEL comes out.  He's still mad that Colt Toombs beat him six months ago and wants a rematch. Grappler books Toombs v George for later in the show. Now Mike Santiago is out. He says Thunder is the biggest bully in the Northwest (Thunder attacked him with a chain a while back), so Grappler books Thunder v Santiago.

-Former XFL SUPERSTAR JOSH WILCOX joins Joe V on commentary again this week

-Match #1
Colt Toombs defeated Gentleman George Michael with a roll up after George missed Toombs and charged into the turnbuckle. Post-match, the scabs attacked Toombs until Pat Large made the save.

-Joe V interviewed Toombs and Large. They have buried their differences to FIGHT THE SCABS!

-Joe V interviewed Roddy Piper and a young girl, who he says is an honor student. Piper lets her say hi to her friends and teachers. Turns out she's Bubba Blanchard's daughter. The Blanchards and Mr. Ooh La La come out. Bubba tells a story about how his daughter used five years worth of her savings to buy catering for all the wrestlers, because the evil promoter never pays them and they can't afford to eat.

-Match #2 - PNW Tag Team Championship
The Blanchard Brothers (c) defeated Dr. Kliever and Erik Baeden when Jeremy pinned Baeden. The finish was Bubba giving Baeden a German Suplex while Jerenmy clotheslined Baeden. Except the suplex was too fast and Jeremy never actually caught up with the clothesline.

-Joe V interviews Thunder. Santiago attacks Thunder from behind with a bullrope and their match comes to an impromptu start.

-Match #3
Thunder defeated Mike Santiago by DQ when the scabs attacked Thunder. Things didn't work out well for the scabs as Thunder cleaned house on them. Santiago and Thunder exchanged words.

-Joe V interviewed PNW champ Big Ugly

-Match #4 - PNW Heavyweight Championship
Big Ugly (c) vs. Exile ended in a T.V. time limit draw. Exile had Ugly in a sleeper hold and Ugly was just about out when time limit expired to save his title. Keep in mind, Ugly is the babyface, so this is kind of a weird finish.

Portland Wrestling Uncut T.V. recap - 4/20/13

-The show opens with Colt Toombs and Patrick Large outside the TV Studio egging the Grappler's car as he drives in. Grappler and the scabs head into the building and are met by a NO SCABS sign. They tear it up and head in anyway. Rebels.

-Joe V interviews the Grappler and THE SCABS. Grappler says they are REPLACEMENT WRESTLERS, not scabs. Grappler says his guys are tough and not whiners and babies like the Portland Wrestling regulars. Mr. Ooh La La interrupts, complete with sweet French music. He offers Grappler a bright colorful mask as an upgrade from the drab colors he's been wearing for fifty or sixty years. Grappler is pissed. Ooh La La suggests Grappler see an anger management specialist. Bubba Blanchard comes out and challenges one of Grapplers SCABS. Grappler sends in Eric Baeden, who wrestles for the WCWC out of Salem, and currently holds their tag team title with Cedric the Hitman.

-Match #1
Eric Baeden defeated Bubba Blanchard by DQ when Bubba refused to break a choke. Brickhouse Barretta (a scab), who I have seen on DOA shows, runs in for the save. Jeremy Blanchard comes out and we have an IMPROMPTU TAG TEAM MATCH. Teddy Long would love this. After a commercial break, we return to Barretta and Baeden double teaming Jeremy. No clue where Bubba went, but he eventually returns with Big Ugly for the save. All the scabs attack the Blanchards and Ugly, BUT THE LIGHTS GO OUT. When they come back on ROWDY RODDY PIPER IS IN THE RING! Piper cleans house with a kendo stick. Piper basically tells the regulars to quit being bitches and fight the scabs. He makes a battle royal for the main event with the winner getting a shot at Big Ugly's title. Piper says he will give the Grappler and his scabs a war.

-Match #2
Mike Santiago defeated Patrick Large by holding the ropes for leverage during the pinfall
I guess the strike is over now because this match was with two of the regular PWU guys

-Joe V interviews PNW champ Big Ugly. He says he loves Portland and comes here by choice. He isn't from the area, but has been coming up from California for the last 12 years. He says he will take the belt all over the country and defend it against everyone. He buries Championship Wrestling from Hollywood and says the guys from PWU are the best.

-Match #3
Exile won the #1 contender Battle Royal, last eliminating the Blanchard Brothers.
The other participants were Patrick Large, Colt Toombs, Eric Right, CJ Edwards, Bubba Blanchard, Jeremy Blanchard, Devon Divine, Brickhouse Barretta, Demarcus James, Eric Baeden, Avarice, El Phoenix, Ricky Gibson, Buddy Highway, Exile, Ethan HD, Thunder, Dr. Kliever, Mike Santiago, Mr. Ooh La La, and a guy in a Rey Misterio mask, whose name I didn't hear because Joe V and Josh Wilcox decided to TALK OVER THE RING ANNOUNCER while he was introducing the wrestlers. It was funny because they joked about him not having a name, even though the ring announcer very clearly said a name, we just couldn't hear it because they were talking.

-Joe V interviewed Exile and the Grappler. There are problems between Grappler and Exile. Hopefully Exile rethinks this babyface turn, because he is a terrible promo and needs Grappler to talk for him.

This was a very overwhelming show. Lots going on. I'm not a fan of the whole scabs vs. PWU guys feud, but it is cool to see some different local guys getting T.V. time.

C.W. Bergstrom

C.W. Bergstrom has been a fixture in Northwest rings for close to 25 years. Tomorrow night he has his retirement match.

Bergstrom began wrestling and refereeing for Don Owen in 1989. He spent the next couple years as a prelim wrestler, before moving up the card near the end of Owen's promotion. One of his greatest claims to fame was being the final PNW Heavyweight champion when Don Owen closed up shop.

Bergstrom spent some time in the USWA, as Principal Bergstrom, including a match with Jerry Lawler at the Mid-South Coliseum. I don't know if it's true, but I always heard he had a WWF deal to come in and feud with the 1-2-3 Kid as the Principal, but it never materialized.

Bergstrom returned to Oregon, where he remained on the indy scene for the next 20 years. During that time he wrestled for virtually every promotion that has come and gone. He has been on several famous cards in the area, including the AAA/CWUSA event in 1994 that Tonya Harding appeared on as Eddie Guerrero and Art Barr's manager.

Bergstrom's final match will be on the Blue Collar Wrestling card Sunday April 21st at the North Portland Eagles (7611 N. Exeter Ave). 6 PM bell time. The event is a fundraiser for Junior Roughriders Baseball.  All tickets are $8.

Portland Wrestling Uncut T.V. recap - 4/13/13

-Show opens with Joe V interviewing Roddy Piper's daughter, Falon Toombs. She says Portland Wrestling Uncut is a family and introduces her dad. Piper says Grappler's show last week made him sick because it was not family friendly. He says he created this show for children to enjoy. They discuss Grappler's scabs, who are supposed to arrive next week. Piper says wrestlers from Hollywood don't scare him. They are setting up Grappler and the outsiders vs. Piper and the Portland crew. Not sure if they are actually going to use Hollywood guys, or if that was the only professional looking taped footage they could get to fill the shows.

-Match #1 - Championship Wrestling from Hollywood (joined in progress)
Los Banditos defeated the Tribe to win the Hollywood tag team title

-Promo for a live event at the Milwaukie Elks Lodge this Tuesday. No matches announced. All the wrestlers are supposed to be on strike, so how can there be a live event?

-Back to Joe V and Piper. Piper says the Blanchards could beat the Hollywood champs, and even thinks Mr. Ooh La La could beat them up.

-Match #2 - Rebroadcast
The Blanchard Brothers defeated Wade BY GOD Hess & Exile to win the PNW tag team title

-Piper and Colt Toombs introduce the next classic match. Piper tells stories about the wrestlers in the match, including Lonnie Mayne and the Sheepherders. Fun segment.

-Flashback: Highlights of Roddy Piper, Red Bastien, & Sam Bass going to a time limit draw with Buddy Rose and the Sheepherders.  I'd guess this was from around 1980.

-Joe V interviewed the Grappler, who refuses to name who his replacement wrestlers are.

-Match #3 - Championship Wrestling from Hollywood (joined in progress)
SoCal Crazy defeated Che Cabrera

-Match #4 - Rebroadcast
Thunder defeated Dr. Kliever & Exile to free Wade BY GOD Hess from the Grappler

-Joe V interviews Grappler to close the show. New shows return next week (they are taping them Sunday). Grappler says his replacement wrestlers will be there. Joe V corrects him and calls them scab wrestlers.

Dutch Savage Hospitalized

Dutch Savage suffered a stroke on Wednesday and is currently in ICU.  Dutch was one of the all time greats, and a very important person in the area historically.  When I was a teenager going to CWUSA at the Baggley Center, where Dutch did the play by play, I'd often talk to him.  He was always very nice, despite the fact I'm sure I was a complete annoyance. Here's hoping he pulls through.

DOA Match of the Week: Kliever vs. J_Sin

In case you missed it, DOA's latest youtube update:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zUKm92r2Pk&feature=youtu.be

J_Sin Sullivan puts his career on the line against Dr. Kliever's DOA title.  From the 3/10 show at the East Portland Moose Lodge.

WCWC results - Salem, OR 4/6/13

Paul Bearer Tribute Show @ Stephens Middle School

1) Stoney McMoverson defeated Lightning champ Freddy Bravo for the title. Post-match, the title change was overturned when McMoverson unmasked to reveal Eric Right.

2) Causmo, Cody Smith, & Jorel Nelson defeated Jay Maddix, Paul Raze, & Alex Prestige

3) Danny Duggan defeated Mike Santiago

4) Cameron Matthews defeated Nick Madrid

5) Wade Hess defeated James Morgan by DQ when the Family Stone interfered

6) Cedric the Hitman & Erik Baeden defeated the Can Am Experience to win the vacant WCWC tag team title

7) WCWC champ Ethan HD vs. Nick Madrid vs. DJ Pringle (Paul Bearer's son) was a no-contest due to Ethan and Pringle constantly double teaming Madrid. Post-match saw run ins from most of the roster and general shenanigans.

Weird result in the main event.  I wasn't there, so maybe it isn't as weird as it reads, but I don't know how you can have DQ in a 3-way because of double teaming. Why would that be illegal? Would like to hear any first hand accounts from someone who was at the show. Feel free to comment here or e-mail: pnwprowrestling@gmail.com

Portland Wrestling Uncut T.V. recap - 4/6/13

-Don Coss opens the show

-Piper and Promoter Pete Schweitzer head into the locker room to talk to the talent.  Schweitzer offers Piper a shot of Jack Daniels but he turns it down.  The wrestlers tear into Schweitzer for not paying them and bring up he's done this in the past.  Kliever points out that Schweitzer was at the BCW show last weekend buying everyone drinks, yet he's supposed to be broke.  Schweitzer asks the wrestlers to call him first with problems, not Piper or the station. Schweitzer says he's going to refinance his house to help fund the promotion, which pisses off Exile for some reason.  He must realize how incredibly stupid a storyline is that tells the audience the promotion is a failure.

-The Grappler joins Don Coss and says he's the reason the show has ratings.  He says he worked for Don Owen and never whined and complained like today's wrestlers.  He says he's bringing in scabs from Hollywood and links to footage of Brian Cage vs. Tyler Cintron from Championship Wrestling from Hollywood.  After a commercial break, Colt Toombs shows up, and Grappler cuts a promo on him. Toombs says before Grappler shows more footage from Hollywood, he wants to see a match from Portland.

-Match #1 - Rebroadcast
Colt Toombs defeated the Grappler

-Flashback: Buddy Rose & Col. DeBeers promo (circa 89 I'd guess). Rose brings out 60 pounds of beef fat to show how much weight he lost on the Buddy Rose diet. He pulls off his shorts and is wearing tighty whities (except they are blue). Rose demonstrates his workout by bouncing his pecs/boobs. Next he brings a woman into the ring (which I believe was his wife) and she spots him doing about four sit-ups, which he says was ten. Next Rose brings in a fan who thinks he's in better shape. Rose does ten one-arm push-ups and when the fan tries he fails miserably. Rose instructs the fan to lose some belly weight. This was so good.

-Colt Toombs holds a 10-bell salute for Reed Flair

-Match #2 - NWA Junior Heavyweight Championship (from Hollywood July 2012)
Kevin Douglas (c) defeated Jack Zaler with a splash off the top rope

-Grappler is gloating about how good the Hollywood guys are, but Coss cuts him off and wants to see footage of Portland's champion.

-Match #3 - Rebroadcast
Big Ugly defeated Daivari to win the PNW title

-Coss closes the show with Toombs and Exile. There will be some kind of show next week because the wrestlers aren't quitting! But are they still striking?

Tony Borne vs. Lonnie Mayne - 3/5/68

Here is the Oregonian's coverage of the 3/5/68 Owen Promotions event at the Memorial Coliseum. The main event of Tony Borne vs. Lonnie Mayne drew the largest crowd in Portland history up until that point.  Owen ran several shows at the Coliseum through the 60's, but I can't find any records of a larger crowd than this.  The 60th Anniversary show in '85 (Piper vs. Rose and Flair vs. Billy Jack) drew 12,000, and a subsequent Extravaganza with Sgt. Slaughter and the Road Warriors also drew around 8,000.  Hogan drew 8,600 against King Kong Bundy in 1986.  The modern WWE shows, of course, have outdrawn it several times.
